Driving Into Canada: Border Basics for Families

If your Niagara Falls plan includes Ontario, you will be crossing an international border. This guide is specifically for driving into Canada. If you are flying into Canada, every U.S. citizen needs a valid passport book, regardless of age.

The big adult-document rule: For a smooth U.S./Canada land-border round trip, adults 16 and older should have a valid U.S. passport book, passport card, Minnesota Enhanced Driver's License, or NEXUS card. A birth certificate alone is not enough for adults.

Documents to Check Now

Adults 16+: passport book/card, Minnesota Enhanced Driver's License, or NEXUS card.
Kids under 16: birth certificate works for land crossings; original, photocopy, or certified copy.
Flying into Canada: passport book required for every U.S. citizen.
Check names: documents should match the traveler as closely as possible.

If a Child Is Not With Both Parents

Bring a signed consent letter from the parent or legal guardian who is not traveling.
Include the child's full name, date of birth, citizenship info, dates, destination, and the traveling adult's name.
Include the non-traveling parent's full name, address, phone number, and a copy of signed ID.
Notarized is best. Bring custody orders, parenting agreements, or a death certificate if applicable.

Customs reality check: No two border crossings are exactly the same. One family may be through in five minutes; the next family in the same line may be sent for a full inspection. Officers have discretion, and different officers can handle the same documents differently. Be patient, answer plainly, and have paperwork easy to reach.

Rainbow Bridge

For the Falls itself, the Rainbow Bridge drops you closest to the Fallsview and Clifton Hill area. Take I-190 through Buffalo and across Grand Island. Expect a bridge toll and cashless tolling on parts of the route.
